Free Residential Recycling is Coming to Colorado

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

Colorado’s new Extended Producer Responsibility program is making recycling free and more accessible across the state. Bruin Waste is here to help you access this service, whether you are a new or existing customer.

What is EPR?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a new Colorado law that requires companies that produce packaging and paper products to pay to support the state’s recycling system. Packaging and paper products include everyday items like cardboard boxes, metal cans, glass bottles, shampoo bottles and so much more. This approach shifts the responsibility to pay for recycling these products from residents and local governments to the producers that circulate these materials.

Western Colorado is a part of the state that has often struggled to provide cost effective recycling programs to residents. EPR is investing money into the state, including the Western Slope, to help expand recycling infrastructure and make recycling more accessible. At Bruin Waste we are committed to bringing these services to our customers, for free, thanks to EPR.

How does EPR work?

01

Producers fund Recycling

Companies that produce packaging and paper products pay into a statewide recycling fund.

02

Recycling Expands

The fund supports infrastructure that expands collection, local processing, and education programs.

03

Colorado Communities Benefit

Waste is diverted from local landfills, and recycling supports community and statewide environmental goals.

04

Residents Recycle More

With access to recycling expanded at no cost to residents, it is easier than ever for households to participate in curbside recycling.

EPR Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few of the questions about EPR that our customers ask most often.

What if I'm not a current Bruin Waste Customer?

No problem, we are more than happy to get you set up with recycling! There is no requirement to switch your trash provider to Bruin in order to take part in EPR-funded recycling. That being said, our office staff is happy to answer any questions you have about trash and composting service options.

When EPR launches in your area, you will automatically see this change on your bill. Feeling inspired to put that money elsewhere? Reach out about our residential curbside compost program, another great way to divert waste!

There is no official launch date. Colorado’s EPR program rollout is still in progress, and timing will vary by area. We’ll continue sharing updates as more information becomes available.
